The development of product development

06-10-2021

Product development has changed in recent decades due to (among other things) the emergence of powerful CAD-software. Depending on the type, for example, a housing or PCB can be developed which are (often) part of a product.

However, it becomes more complex when a product consists of several partial products (subassemblies), which must meet both mechanical (geometric factors) and electrical specifications (interconnections). In order to limit costs, risks and the number of prototype iterations, these CAD-packages nowadays often offer the possibility to integrate the developed (partial) products in 3D into the desired product composition.

In addition to the technical aspect, changes in project management processes also have an impact on the way in which (multidisciplinary) product development is carried out. The waterfall (V) model has been rampant for a long time, but in recent years there have been trends that are increasingly taking shape and are also being implemented in practice. Think, for example, of Agile/Scrum, a dynamic method compared to the waterfall (V) model (a clearly linear method).
