Internet of Things: the lasting trend

16-08-2018

Internet of Things (IoT) developments will increase significantly in the coming years. According to consultancy Gartner, 26 billion devices will be connected via the IoT by 2020. There are various options for allowing devices to communicate with each other, which require the right hardware platform. But how do you choose the right one?

IoT makes it possible for systems and devices to communicate with each other and to have them act on it. This is done by the supporting software. To determine which platform to choose, you first need to know which applications, desired functionalities and needs you want to realize with the IoT network. Examples of possible wishes that can be created for this are:

- Preventive maintenance and support;
- Creating extra returns in current services;
- Additional services using data analysis;
- Remote management and system control.

The functionalities, needs and your own business strategy form the requirements you place on your IoT platform. Some of the aspects you can think of are security, stability of hardware and network, scalability with longevity support in mind, accessibility and power consumption.

Although good software is crucial in the network, the hardware will ensure that the hardware platform can support all desired options. With this aspect in mind one can make a choice for the hardware solution. Very rarely will people (be able to) use a standard 'off the shelf' article (link website), because links often have to be made with own market-specific sensors and input/output. As a result, people are often faced with the following choice: fully in-house driven hardware development, or hardware development based on module integration (eg COM, M2.COM and communication modules).

IIn both cases, VEDS Group can advise you and help you create the desired hardware solution. Our technical engineers can design a complete design based on your idea or concept. Do you want to know more or do you need help, please contact us.
